Sandiganbayan denies
bid to suspend Monico
BUT SAYS IT CAN BE REFILED

The Sandiganbayan Fourth Division has denied the motion of the prosecution to suspend Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella but said this is without prejudice to its refiling after proper compliance with Section 4 of Rule 15 of the Rules of Court.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor had asked the Sandiganbayan to suspend Puentevella pending the litigation of his graft case in connection with the alleged anomalous purchase of computer packages amounting to P26 million.
The graft case against Puentevella et al, stemmed from the alleged overpriced purchase of computers and software packaged at P400,000 each, and worth P26 million in 2001 to 2006, funded from his Priority Development Assistance Fund, or pork barrel, during his incumbency as congressman of Bacolod City.
Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said the Negros Island Region needs a regional center.
“All regions of the country have regional centers,” Marañon said.
The governor was reacting to the statement of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo Wednesday that he is opposed to the eventual creation of a NIR regional center at the boundary of Kabankalan City and Mabinay town.
Degamo had said that it will be more convenient for all if the status quo is adopted where half of the NIR regional offices remain in Bacolod City, and the other half in Dumaguete City.

IN MABINAY
4 sinkholes form at river
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW
Four sinkholes have formed in Barangay Hagtu, Mabinay town in Negros Oriental, following what was believed to be an earthquake of still unknown strength in the area Wednesday.
No casualties were reported, so far, but at least 22 households stand to be affected should the sinkholes grow bigger with the continuous rains, Mabinay Mayor Ernesto Uy said, adding a pre-emptive evacuation is in the offing if warranted.
Uy said in a phone interview yesterday that the local government is keeping a close watch of the sinkholes located near the riverbed of the Malaiba River in Hagtu as heavy rains continue to inundate the upland town. .
