The four Visayas regions have a combined population of 18,003,940, with the Negros Island Region, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas accounting for 23 percent each, and Central Visayas with 31 percent, Philippine Statistics Authority data shows.
The PSA data was submitted to the Visayas Regional Development Committee that said the establishment of the NIR as a new region has led to a new administrative and political configuration for the Visayas.
The NIR has a population of 4,194,525, Western Visayas – 4,194,579, Eastern Visayas – 4,101,322, and Central Visayas – 5,513,514, the PSA report said.
Eastern Visayas accounts for the biggest land area among the four regions at 39 percent, with 23,251 square kilometers. This is followed by NIR at 22 percent (13,351 sq. km), Western Visayas at 21 percent (12,829 sq. km), and Central Visayas at 18 percent (10,500 sq. km), the PSA report added.
NIR (Region 18) has two provinces - Negros Occidental and Oriental, 19 cities, 38 municipalities, and 1,219 barangays.
Western Visayas (Region 6) has five provinces - Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras and Iloilo, three cities, 98 municipalities and 3,389 barangays.
Central Visayas (Region 7) has three provinces – Bohol, Cebu and Siquijor, 10 cities, 97 municipalities and 2,446 barangays.
Eastern Visayas has six provinces – Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar and Southern Leyte, seven cities, 136 municipalities and 4,390 barangays, the PSA said.*CPG
