Commissioner Ma. Rowena Amelia Guanzon of the Commission on Elections will meet women actively involved in politics in Negros Oriental in a consultative meeting in Dumaguete City Friday.
Guanzon is scheduled to arrive Thursday in time for this year's 114 th Founders' Day anniversary of Silliman University, of which she is among the three Outstanding Sillimanian awardees.
She is expected to focus on gender equality, highlighting the role of women in politics during the consultative meeting on “Women in Political Parties”, 4 p.m. Friday at the Exhibit Hall of the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City.
Invited to the consultation are female legislators, mayors and councilors, Governor Roel Degamo, Vice Governor Mark Macias, and Reps. Emmanuel Iway of the 1st district, George Arnaiz - 2nd district, and Pryde Henry Teves - 3rd district.
Meanwhile, this year's Outstanding Sillimanian Award goes to an engineer, who is instrumental in upholding the high degree of integrity of the critical Mindanao power grid despite the power generation crisis; an internationally-acclaimed performing artist with a nationalistic heart; and Guanzon, a legal luminary who is a staunch advocate of gender equality and women's rights, Mark Raygan Garcia of the SU Office of Information and Publication said.
Emmanuel Abellanosa is awarded in the field of Power and Energy Resources Engineering and Management; Miguel Braganza II in Performing Arts; and Guanzon in Law (Gender Equality and Women's Rights).
They will be honored with medallions and plaques during a special convocation, 9 a.m. on August 28 at the SU Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.*JFP
