The Sugar Alliance of the Philippines yesterday called on President Benigno Aquino III to ensure that those responsible for the recent upsurge in sugar smuggling, including government officials, will be prosecuted.

The latest of a series of seizures was P85 million worth of smuggled sugar from Thailand that was presented to the media at the Manila International Container Port (MICP) yesterday.

There should be a determined effort by the Bureau of Customs to ensure that sugar smuggling does not happen again, Manuel Lamata, chairman of the SAP Sugar Anti-Smuggling Office, said in a letter to the President.moremoremore

SRA: 100% of PH sugar
set for domestic market
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The Sugar Regulatory Administration has allocated all of the country's sugar production for crop year 2015-2016 to “B”, or the domestic sugar market, SRA Administrator Ma. Regina Bautista-Martin said yesterday.

Sugar Order No. 1 Series of 2015-2016 released by Martin yesterday states that 100 percent of the country's sugar will be allocated for the domestic sugar market to ensure stabilized prices at levels reasonably profitable to producers and fair to consumers.

The order states that due to unfavorable weather conditions and reduction of sugarcane areas, the total raw sugar production for crop year 2015-2016, from Sept. 1, 2015 to Aug. 31, 2016, is estimated at 2.27 million metric tons.

EDC to green Negros
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Energy Development Corporation yesterday started its stakeholder consultations in preparation for a massive greening project in the entire Negros Island.

The expanded Binhi program aims to target, not only Negros Oriental but Negros Occidental, and will involve partners and stakeholders for a greener Negros, James Villaroman, EDC's business unit head for Negros Island, said.

Binhi is a corporate-led four-pronged reforestation initiative of EDC, focusing not just on growing trees but bringing back vanishing high value species, especially the endemic or native trees of the Philippines, and for biodiversity restoration, he said. .moremoremore
