Doctor warns athletes,
students vs. concussion

Concussions are serious concerns in sports for the damage being done to students and professional athletes, Dr. Melissa Anglo said in a press release.

In the past, athletes were expected to shake it off and continue to play after suffering a concussion or 'ding,' she said.

Today, we know that it is unsafe for any athlete to return-to-play the same day they have suffered a concussion, and it is recommended that athlete must not return-to-play until they have been cleared by an appropriate professional, she said.

In an effort to bring awareness and increase screening, she is inviting all students and professional athletes aged 5 to 35 to have the King-Devick Test, a quick and inexpensive test, as baseline and, whenever concussions happen, followed up annually, Anglo said.

She said she hopes that this test will contribute to the "Act to Provide for Systemic Research and Collection of Information with Respect to Sports-Related Concussions" introduced in Congress by Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, she added.

Sugar overload
in ‘Biyahe ni Drew’

GMA Network’s “Biyahe ni Drew” program will explore southern Negros, considered the Sugar Bowl of the Philippines, 8 p.m. tomorrow, and it will be hosted by Drew Arellano, a press release from the station said.

Southern Negros is believed to yield half of the country’s sugar produce, and 54 percent of the land in the province is made up of sugarcane farms.

Drew’s first destination is Kabankalan City, a two-hour van ride from the Bacolod-Silay Airport, with several pit stops on the way, like the sericulture farm of the Organization for Industrial Spiritual and Cultural Advancement in Bago City, where he will witness the intricacy of silk cloth-making from the cocoons of silkworm, the press release also said.

The show will also feature various eateries and signature dishes, and the celebration of the Sinulog de Kabankalan in devotion to the Sto. Nino, the press release added.*

Peruvian artist visits USLS

Museo Negrense De La Salle, in cooperation with the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, presented Peruvian artist Antonio Paucar, at the Museo Negrense De La Salle in Bacolod Tuesday, a press release from the school said.

Among Paucar’s works are the “Suspendido en la Quena (Excerpt)”, “Vigilando el Agua”, “Danzando con Misluciemagas”. Artists and students were given a chance to interact with him during the event, that was also attended by Metrobank representatives, who invited the students to join the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence Competition, the press release added.*
