Duterte shrugs off presidency
talks, promotes federal gov’t
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte again shrugged off reports that he will seek the presidency in the 2016 elections when he visited Dumaguete City Wednesday to promote federalism in schools as well as meet with local officials.

Duterte’s visit was earlier reported to be part of a tour to “listen to the people” and determine his chances in the presidential race next year.

Former North Cotabato Gov. Manny Piñol, a staunch supporter of Duterte, had said before the mayor’s visit that it is up to him to decide on this. He said Duterte’s visit was part of a campaign to promote his advocacy for a federal system of government.

Soldiers urged to
pursue peace, security

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Army chief, Lt. Gen. Hernando Iriberri, rallied Tuesday the 3rd Infantry Division officers and men on the continuing pursuit of the objectives of the Internal Peace and Security Plan “Bayanihan” by continued engagement with various stakeholders.

Iriberri, who visited the 3ID headquarters in Jamindan, Capiz, also discussed the current thrust of the Philippine Army, especially the capability upgrade under its Army Transformation Roadmap with soldiers, that includes the procurement of new rifles, modern communication equipment, vehicles, field ambulances, armored vests, helmets and combat boots, among others.

On the professional growth of soldiers, he said the programs will be implemented to improve their individual readiness, performance, development, capability, and capacity.

PNP vows continued
campaign vs. drugs

The Provincial Intelligence Branch/Special Operations Group of the Philippine National Police in Negros Oriental vowed to continue without let-up its campaign against the proliferation of illegal drugs in the province.

The unit had seized almost P1.5 million worth of suspected shabu and arrested 10 suspected drug personalities since January 1, this year, Senior Insp. Jul Muhammad Jamiri, PIB/SOG chief, said.

Other units, like the Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group, and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency also conduct separate, and sometimes, collaborative efforts against the illegal drug trade.
