Monitoring team urged
for resizing of EDC plant

A multi-partite monitoring team is being recommended for the proposed resizing of the capacity of the Energy Development Corporation- Northern Negros Geothermal Power Plant in Brgy. Mailum, Bago City, Negros Occidental.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. has endorsed the creation of the monitoring team for approval to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental.

Marañon requested for approval, and for authority from the SP to sign the memorandum of agreement between the Departments of Environment and Natural Resources as well as Energy, provincial government of Negros Occidental, local governments of Bago and Murcia, barangays of Mailum and Minoyan,. Ma-ao Parish Human Development Corp. and EDC-NNGP on the creation of the multi-partite monitoring team.

The EDC is pursuing a 6 to 8 megawatt geothermal power plant in its existing NNGP plant in Brgy. Mailum, Bago City.

The NNGP operation in Bago City was shut down in 2011, after it failed to generate the expected 40MW power. Its equipment were transferred to the Southern Negros Geothermal Power plant in Valencia, Negros Oriental.

The EDC had earlier informed the Sangguniang Panlalawigan that it is looking into Mt. Mandalagan in Negros Occidental as a possible source of geothermal power, after the Department of Energy identified it as one of the areas that has potential for power generation, specifically, geothermal energy.

EDC said the area of exploration covers 77,733 hectares in the cities of Bacolod, Talisay, Silay, Victorias, Sagay and Cadiz, as well as in the municipalities of EB Magalona, Manapla, Salvador Benedicto, Calatrava and Murcia.*GPB
