SP seeking clarification
on EDC projects in NegOr

BY RENE GENOVE

The Negros Oriental Sangguniang Panlalawigan has invited the officials of the Energy Development Corporation to appear before the SP this week on the allegations of some environmentalists about the cutting of hundreds of trees and the opening of road networks in Valencia to Dauin, that affect water sources in Mt. Talinis.

Vice Governor Mark Macias said the members of the SP would like to know all the facts and allegations by environmentalists groups and the bikers on the cutting of hundreds of trees in Balas-Balas and Lagunao and the proposed opening of a road network in Puhagan, Valencia to Magsaysay, Dauin that allegedly threaten the water sources.

Macias also wants to know if the Sanggunian, as a body, is the proper forum for the environmentalists seeking relief.

The report said various groups advocating the Save Mt. Talinis drive aired their gripes over the failure of some local government units to halt the expansion projects of EDC that is allegedly threatening the remaining forest cover and water sources of the province.

The environmental activists argue that opening a road network in Puhagan to Magsaysay, Dauin will contribute to the pollution of lakes Nailig, Mabilog and Yagumyum in Dauin, known as major sources of water in the province.

The EDC had said the expansion projects are designed to provide stable and clean power to the Visayas grid amid the looming energy crisis.*RG
