World Boxing Organization two-division titlist and longest reigning Filipino world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes gave his townmates in Murcia a glimpse of his boxing skills in an exhibition fight Saturday at Murcia Sports and Cultural Center.
Nietes, who earlier inaugurated the boxing gym in the town named after him, fought against one of the promising boxers of ALA Gym, Gerard Suico.
The brief display of skills by Nietes serves as a preview of his scheduled March 28 title defense for his WBO junior flyweight belt against Mexican Luis Ceja in Manila.
Nietes had always been grateful to the support of his townmates in Murcia, under the leadership of Mayor Andrew Montelibano.
The Nietes-Suico exhibition fight was one of the highlights of the ALA-Cobra “Tunay na Lakas’ boxing spectacle held in Murcia, Saturday that featured talented fighters from different provinces in the country.
The biggest winner in the event was Jonas “Zorro” Sultan of Zamboanga del Norte, who knocked out former Philippine junior flyweight champion Jerson Mancio of Misamis Oriental at 2:11 of the fifth round.
Other results from philboxing.com showed Geo Santisima of Masbate scoring a technical knockout in the 6th round against Zamboangeño Boyce Sultan, and Jefcon Concerman of Talisay City getting a unanimous decision in his favor against Raul Yu of Butuan.
Other winners by unanimous decision were Pete Apolinar San Pablo, Laguna against Jun Ryan Quimbo of Cebu, Virgel Vitor of Tagbilaran against Kenneth Neron of Talisay, Joepher Montano against Paul Varona and Ernesto Alera against Jonnel Burlado .
