SAYS HE WAS ONLY STATING FACTS
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said there is no reason for him to issue a public apology to Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo on remarks he made about the proposed Negros Island Region, as he was simply stating facts.

“Only the President, aside from Congress, has the authority to create a new region,” he pointed out.

In his letter to President Benigno Aquino III, dated Jan. 6, 2015, Degamo slammed Marañon for his remarks on the proposal to create the island region. moremoremore

Brothers acquitted
for slay of parents
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

“They were acquitted on the 9th death anniversary of our parents, it added insult to injury.”

That was the reaction of Negros-based Katrina Tan, 20, to the acquittal yesterday of her two half-brothers Jan Michael and Archie Tan of parricide and murder charges in relation to the killing of their father - Iloilo businessman Francisco “Bobby” Tan, her Negrense mother Cynthia Marie Zayco-Tan and her 6-year-old sister, Katherine.

Judge Globert Justalero of the Iloilo RTC Branch 32 ruled that the prosecution failed to prove the guilt of the brothers beyond reasonable doubt. moremoremore

trike fare rate reduction
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Members of the Dumaguete City Sangguniang Panlungsod  cannot decide whether to pass a resolution to reduce the tricycle fare in the city with commuters questioning  the  P8.50 rates  when the  price of gasoline has reduced to P41 per liter.

Under Ordinance No. 177, series of 2007, the tricycle fare rate is  to be automatically adjusted based on the cost of fuel, and a public hearing held each time the rates are increased.

In 2011, the fare rate was adjusted from P8 to P8.50 when the price per liter of gasoline reached P62, which  the drivers claimed to have  greatly affected their daily income..moremoremore
