‘Hike in real property tax
to benefit Dumagueteños’
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Dumaguete City Sangguniang Panlungsod approved various landmark legislations in 2014, like the general revision of the schedule of the fair market values of real property taxes in the city that, for the last 20 years had not been changed.

As a result, Dumaguete was placed in the top 10 non-performing cities in the country in terms of real property taxes, Vice Mayor Woodrow Maquiling said. But, he said, with political will, the present administration was able to convince local taxpayers through a series of public consultations that raising the RPT will benefit them and the entire populace, as recipients of basic services from their taxes.

NORSU OIC facing raps
before Ombudsman Visayas

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A faculty member of the Negros Oriental State University has filed a complaint against the school’s officer-in-charge, Peter Dayot, before the Deputy Ombudsman in the Visayas for conduct prejudicial to the best interest of service, gross dishonesty and violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

The anonymous complaint dated December 11, 2014 said that when Dayot was still the chairman of the NORSU Bids and Awards Committee, with Glenn Lumjod as secretary and university supply officer, the school procured goods and services without the approval of the Board of Regents, from 2006 to 2012.

The complaint said the procurement without BOR approval is contrary to Republic Act 9299, particularly Section 7 (g), or the NORSU Charter, and RA 9184, or an Act providing for the Modernization, Standardization and Regulation of the Procurement Activities of the Government, and for other purposes.

Referee accreditation
course, licensing held

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Inc. held a three day accreditation course and licensing of referees in Negros Oriental and Siquijor provinces recently, as part of the efforts to organize SBP-accredited referees all over the country.

Topics discussed were FIBA rules and interpretations by Liberato Valenzuela, chair of the SBP national technical committee, and FIBA referee Ariel Bermeo, assisted by SBP regional official Rey Canete, provincial director Dennis Cimafranca, and local referees.
