Sugarcane production hike
through genomics underway

The Philippine sugarcane industry is upbeat on increasing productivity by using high-yielding variety for sugarcane, through the Sugarcane Genomics Project, representatives of the Philippine Genome Center of the University of the Philippines said.

Agriculture project directors Rita Laude and Antonio Laurena of the PGC, who called on Administrator Ma. Regina Bautista-Martin of the Sugar Regulatory Administration, said genomics is potential to agriculture, a press release said yesterday.

They are focusing on studying sugarcane genes and DNA extraction from SRA for analysis, for more high-yielding varieties for sugarcane, and for varietal development using genetic markers, in collaboration with the SRA.

DOT mobile accreditation
set in Negros Jan. 26-30

The province of Negros Occidental, in partnership with the Department of Tourism, will conduct a mobile accreditation in the province on January 26 to 30, intended to encourage global competitiveness and facilitate the promotion of individual enterprise and the tourism industry as a whole, a DOT press release said yesterday.

The DOT is inviting all  tourism enterprises such as travel and tour services; land, sea and air transport services for tourist use; tour guides; adventure sports services involving such sports as mountaineering;

 Spelunking, scuba diving and other sports, accommodation establishments including but not limited to hotels, resorts, apartelles, tourist inns, motels, pension houses and homestay operators; convention and exhibition organizers; tourism estate management services;

SP extends biz
permits deadline

An ordinance extending the deadline for the filing of applications for business permits and licenses and payment of fees and taxes to February 28, 2015 without surcharges and penalties, was passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday on first, second and third reading.

The ordinance was authored by Councilor Claudio Puentevella and co-authored by Councilor El Cid Familiaran.

Earlier, the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry through its president Frank Carbon requested for an extension of the deadline of filing of City Business Permits for 2015 and the first quarter payment to February 28, in his letter dated January 9 to Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella and Vice Mayor Greg Gasataya.
