The delayed collection of garbage in Dumaguete City in the past days was due to the breakdown of dump trucks of the city, Rey Awayan Sr., head of the city’s Environment and Natural Resources Office, said.
Awayan said the problem was contained yesterday after he requested the City Engineer’s Office for a pay loader and two dump trucks to augment the other garbage trucks of the city.
He said the pay loader and the two dump trucks began hauling trash from the Quezon Park, where huge piles of garbage had accumulated since the city’s fiesta celebration in November through the holidays.
Another dump truck, also from the CEO, has been deployed to work overtime in collecting garbage.
Dumaguete averages about 40 tons of trash per day, that has to be collected by ENRO and brought to the dumpsite in Barangay Candauay. Last week, the city government inaugurated the new ENRO building near the dumpsite. Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria had announced then that his administration’s priority is to improve garbage collection and focus on environment-related concerns.
He said the city government hopes to procure two bulldozers to help in the trash collection.
Awayan said garbage collection will become more regular with the planned clustering of barangays at a meeting yesterday at the ENRO.
He said garbage tags, color coded green for bio-degradable and red for non-biodegradable, are still in effect, and can be obtained for a small fee at the City Treasurer’s Office.*JFP
