A fifth grader from Silliman University Elementary Department in Dumaguete City will join the Philippine delegation to the International Mathematics Competition July 31 to August 3 in Singapore, a press release from SU said.
Carlos Miguel Angelo Salazar was among the 48 students from around the Philippines who made it through a series of rigorous training and examinations. He was the only one from Negros Oriental, who clinched a spot in the final stretch of the selection process.
He is a consistent honor student and has competed in the same international math competition in Hong Kong in the last two years, and had won one bronze and two silver medals.
On August 6, he will compete in the Australian Mathematics Competition that will be held in Cebu City, the press release said.
Meanwhile, t he musical that brings to another level a combination of theater with original Filipino compositions, through the Philippines' first orkestra sin arko (orchestra without bows), premiered July 3 at the SU Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.
“Ampalaya the Musical”, which captured the hearts of audiences across age brackets, tells of a lively yet moving story of how the vegetable "ampalaya" (bitter gourd) came about, taking on its outer appearance and bitter taste, the press release said.
It packs into every scene the nutritional value of vegetables, and pushes the storyline further to seamlessly infuse real-life stories that depict the importance of camaraderie, trust, sharing and unity.
Theater actress Dessa Quesada-Palm directs the musical written by New York-based maestro, Michael Dadap, and loosely adapted from the children's book by Augie Rivera, starring many of Dumaguete's local thespians and singers. It is supported by the Cultural Center of the Philippines Kaisa sa Sining, the press release said.
“Ampalaya” will be presented July 15 at the CCP main theater, and for tickets, those interested may contact cac@su.edu.ph; or call (035) 422-4365 or 0917-3235953, the press release added.*
