DPWH flood control projects
start to solve flooding: solon

The effect of the first heavy rains we are experiencing now show we are starting to solve the problem of flooding in Bacolod, a press release from the office of Bacolod Rep. Evelio Leonardia said yesterday.

Leonardia said engineers of the Department of Public Works and Highway have reported that flood-prone areas where drainage systems have been put up recently no longer flooded even with the heavy rains last Thursday.

This is good news, this means our flood control program is starting to work, Leonardia said.

Two most flood-prone areas which they monitored during the rains were Araneta Street in front of the Sugar Regulatory Administration office and the Girl Scouts building, and at Lacson Street near Robinsons Place.

They had just worked on the drainage system along the stretch of Araneta Street, and have built a flood wall along the Mandalagan River near Robinsons, Leonardia said.

“We wanted to see if they were effective in preventing floods and our initial report shows they are,” the solon also said.

“We will continue to monitor them,” he added. The two projects are part of the P1.3-billion flood control program being implemented by the DPWH office of the Lone District of Bacolod.

In the pipeline are the dredging of Mandalagan River traversing barangays Banago, Mandalagan and Villamonte; Banago creek that cuts through barangays Bata and Banago; Mambuloc creek across barangays 3, 4, and 21; Magsungay River that flows through barangays Singcang-Airport and Alijis; and Lupit River that cuts through barangays Taculing and Singcang, Leonardia said.

Aside from these, road widening projects that are in various stages of implementation, such as the one in Araneta Street, also include drainage systems, he added.*
