David Foster remembered
So David Foster did not forget. Those who had watched the presentations of “Asia's Got Talent” had seen how much the famous record producer and talent promoter, was impressed by the performance of the Filipina singer, Gerphil Flores, and had made no secret, even while the contest was going on, how much he admired her performance. When he saw how crestfallen she was at landing only third in the contest, he went to her and spoke to her, but nothing of what was said was revealed. It was enough, though, to brighten up the face of Gerphil.

In one part of the competition, however, he actually declared in the hearing of everyone that the world would get to know about her talents. Now it seems that he meant everything he said, because it has been announced that he has asked her to join his latest Asian concert called “David Foster and Friends” that will start next month in Kuala Lumpur. What a wonderful start for the talented girl, who should try her very best, not only to showcase her talent, but also to make sure that she follows all the tips and advices she gets while in the show.

We are, indeed, very happy for this girl, and for the great opportunity she has been given. Foster, as we know, has been the “developer” of so many musical artists, among them Charice Pempengco who, it now seems, is better known elsewhere than in her own country. Let us hope, and pray that Gerphil will keep her own feet firmly planted on the ground and make sure that her head does not get swollen by the attention she will be getting! She should always remember that she is representing her country, wherever she performs. Good luck to her!

That was a terrible tragedy that happened in Ormoc Thursday. As of yesterday, the news about the sinking of the M/B Kim Nirvana vessel was that the owner of the vessel, its captain and 19 crew members are all being charged with murder for the deaths of at least 59 people. As in so many other sea tragedies involving interisland travel, the culprit is believed to be overloading, not only with passengers, but with a heavy cargo of rice, cement and fertilizer.

Ironically, it was also found out that the manifest did not match the actual number of passengers. And even if it did, what about the cargo, was it accounted for? Reports said there were only 173 listed, but, so far, the survivors and the bodies recovered have already reached 199. I wonder, however, why the charges being filed against those believed responsible was murder. Could that not give a leeway for the accused, who might claim that it was just an accident?

Things seem to be getting worse instead of better for the Binay dynasty. After the suspension of the Makati mayor, Jejomar Junior, more questionable activities are being unearthed by the vice mayor who took over. Among them is the discovery that several employees who have disappeared and had not reported for six months now have continued to receive their salaries and other benefits. Of course, that could not have happened without the knowledge of the mayor.

We might be thinking that the problem of Greece has nothing to do with us, but it has been disclosed that there are about 40,000 to 60,000 Pinoys either working or living in that country. Now that it is in big financial trouble, both foreigners and natives are getting desperate because they could no longer withdraw from their banks and, if at all, in very limited amounts only. A report from the international wire services told about a honeymooning Greek couple who went to the United States and found out that their credit cards could not be honored! They could not pay even for meals, until some organization helped them. Let's be grateful that even if our country is not among the richest ones, our peso is still solid.*
