Local WWII veterans
receive add'l assistance
Members of the Bacolod City Veterans of World War II received an additional P500 on top of their P1,000 quarterly financial assistance during the distribution of their benefits at the Office of Senior Citizen's Affairs at the ground floor of the Bacolod City Hall recently, a press release from the Office of Councilor Archie Baribar said.
“Effective this year, the WWII veterans or their surviving spouses will receive P1,500 quarterly financial assistance from the city,” said Baribar, author of the ordinance that increased the benefit of the veterans. The ordinance was approved by the City Council January 19.
Baribar said the city has a budget of P2.5 million from the City Mayor's Office for its Veterans Welfare Program, facilitated by the City Social Services and Development Office and given as financial assistance to the 637 members of the Bacolod City Veterans of World War II or their surviving spouses.
Pursuant to City Ordinance 502 dated August 14, 2009, the city has been extending financial assistance of P1,000 to veterans or their surviving spouses, the press release said.
The decreasing number of Bacolod WWII veterans and their surviving spouses has reduced the number of recipients entitled to receive from said budget, thereby leaving a substantial amount available for those who are still alive, Baribar explained.
“We hope that the P500 increase in their P1,000 quarterly financial assistance can, somehow, help provide for the needs of our veterans during the twilight years of their lives,” he added.*
