Rodriguez's challenge

Donnie Nietes has dismissed the brash 21-year-old Mexican challenger Francisco Rodriguez' voww to knock him out when the two meet in the main event tonight of Pinoy Pride 31 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino n Lahug, Cebu City.

After the official weigh-in yesterday, the World Boxing Organization awarded Nietes a diamond ring enrusted with rubies and emeralds in acknowledgment of his feat as the longest reigning Filipino world champion.

At the press conference Thursday, Rodriguez, 17-2-1 with 11 knockouts, has vowed to end the seven-year reign of Nietes and even called him an old champion.

Coaches attend 3-day training

A three-day training-seminar on coaching of the different sports events for coaches and teachers in Negros Occidental started yesterday at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center in Bacolod City.

The training is a program of the Department of Education in collaboration with the provincial government, and the Philippine Sport Commission, a press release from the Capitol said.

DepEd has organized and assigned resource speakers and facilitators for archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, basketball, billiard, boxing, chess, football, futsal, gymnastics, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, wrestling, and wushu.
