BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Dr. Erlinda de los Reyes, an anesthesiologist from Bacolod City, received the University of San Agustin Alumni Achievement Award in the field of Public and Community Service, at the USA Chapel in Iloilo City July 16.
De los Reyes graduated in high school in 1955, and took her pre Med in 1957 at USA-Iloilo.
The awarding ceremony, held in line with the university's 111 th year on the theme “USA@111: One Mind, One Heart, One San Agustin”, started with a Eucharistic mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Eusebio Berdon at the university chapel.
University president, Fr. Frederick Comendador, gave the welcome address, while Fr. Williener Jack Luna introduced the awardees.
The other awardees were Erwin Sustento in the education category, Jonel Saludes – environment, science and technology, Alfredo Javellana II and John Tampo – entrepreneurship and management, George Canicula (posthumous) – culture and arts, Judge Marie Yvette Dedel-Go – law category, Dr. Doralyn Dalisay – medicine and health sciences, and Rodolfo Gonzales – sports.
Comendador said De los Reyes' commendable accomplishments are clear manifestations of the excellence and relevance of Agustinian education, and that her noble and professional life as an alumna unequivocally demonstrates the outstanding ability of Agustinians to be great, not only at what they do but, more importantly, to be even greater at using their competencies and talents to transform communities and promote the common good.
De los Reyes said that being a doctor of medicine and anesthesiologist gave her the opportunity to serve the public and community, especially the poor, with compassion and mercy.
When she became president of the Bacolod City Lioness Club, her projects were geared on medical missions, the reason that Lions Club International awarded them as one of the “Top Ten Lioness Club Service Awards,” she said.
She said the different medical societies where she became president also gave her the venue to construct a nutrition feeding center, water sealed clinic, small police outpost, and the donation of 17 houses to Gawad Kalinga in Brgy. Cabug, Bacolod City, among others, as well as conduct public and community services.
She was past president of the Philippine Medical Women's Association-Negros Occidental Chapter, Negros Occidental Medical Society, Canlaon Medical Society, Philippine College of Occupational Medicine, Philippine Society of Anesthesiology-Neg. Occ. Chapter, and Catholic Physician's Guild of the Philippines.
De los Reyes was also adjudged by the Auxiliary to the Philippine Medical Association as one of the five Outstanding Physician in Community Service awardees during the 30 th TOPICS Awarding Ceremonies, when she was the District Governor for Western Visayas of the Philippine Medical Association; the “Dr. Jose P. Rizal Memorial Award in Community leadership” by the Philippine Medical Association, and the “Outstanding Filipino Physician 2012” by JCI Senate Philippines.*CGS
