UFL championship
BY NIDA BUENAFE

Ceres-La Salle FC strengthened its dominance of the United Football League with a 2-0 win over Kaya FC Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium to move closer to the League championship.

In taming Kaya, Ceres FC registered their 12 th victory in 14 games after a draw and a loss to earn 37 points and stay nine points ahead of defending champion Global FC. Kaya is now at No. 3 with 25 points.

“We only need a point in the next three games and we are almost champions now,” Ceres FC director and head coach Ali Go said, as he credited the players for working hard and playing good defense.

“Kaya also played good but we just had the quality to finish our chances,” Go said.

Ceres' next match will be against Team Socceroo FC this Saturday. They will face Stallion FC on August 2 and will play their final game against Manila Jeepney FC on August 5.

Ceres' two goals against Kaya were delivered by Spanish recruits Bienvenido Marañon and Adrian Gallardo in the 39th and 58th minutes.

Marañon scored on a play set up by Martin Steuble in the first half while Gallardo converted after receiving a pass from Manny Ott early in the second half.

Topping the tournament will give Ceres an outright spot in next year's Asian Football Confederation Cup.*NAB
