A Negros Island Region Command that will integrate the operations of all the armed services on the island will be created soon, Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr., chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, said yesterday.
The creation of the new command, to be headed by a general, is in line with President Benigno Aquino's recent creation of the NIR, composed of Negros Occidental and Oriental, Catapang said.
He announced the creation of the new command at rites held at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center in Bacolod where Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. declared Negros Occidental a peaceful and ready for further development province.

The Sandiganbayan only gave Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella, who is facing graft charges, 10 days to travel to New York City in the United States.
Puentevella was allowed to leave the country not earlier than June 8 and be back not later than June 17.
Puentevella's spokesperson, Lorney Lyzander Dilag, yesterday said, “We consider this a positive answer to the malicious insinuations that the mayor is banned from travelling abroad.”

‘It's up to Negrenses
to make NIR happen'
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE & RENE GENOVE
Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas yesterday said the future of Negros Island is now in Negros, and “it is up to Negrenses to make it happen, and to write, work and arrive at the future.”
Roxas was in Dumaguete City for a caucus on Executive Order 183 signed by President Benigno Aquino III that creates the Negros Island Region, to be composed of Negros Oriental and Occidental.
Roxas said Section 2 of EO 183 refers to the creation of a Technical Working Group that will formulate a roadmap to put in place the institutional arrangements for the NIR by 2015-2016, and to recommend to the Office of the President the preferred regional center; arrange the requirements for organizational development, staffing and budgeting of regional line and regulatory agencies, and the imperatives for development planning and investment programming.
