Fishermen protest
vs. fisheries code

BY PEACE S. FLORES

Small-scale fishermen under the National Federation of Small Fisherfolk Organizations in the Philippines (PAMALAKAYA Negros) held a fluvial parade from E.B. Magalona to Punta Taytay in Bacolod City on Wednesday to express indignation over the shortcomings of Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code.

Joining them were members of the Kilusang Mayo Uno, Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (KADAMAY) and other militant progressive groups under Bagong Alyansang Makabayan. They took the route along the coastlines of Silay and Talisay and ended at Punta Taytay where a short program was held.

Noly Rosales of KMU said the activity was to show support for the poor fishermen in the community.

“We protest the fishing laws in the country because they favor more the capitalist interests of major local corporate and foreign fishing firms, especially here in Negros Occidental,” Rosales said.*PSF
