St. John’s Institute Aspirants girls’ volleyball team beat St. Theresita’s Academy on Saturday’s playoff, 25-16, 25-22, to sweep all titles in NOPSSCEA girls’ volleyball for school year 2014-2015 at the USLS Covered Court.
The talent-laden SJI girls’ volleyball teams, mentored by Peter Yusay, were crowned NOPSSCEA champion in both elementary and high school last year. The elementary conquered St. Francis of Assisi School in the finals, while the high school team prevailed over perennial rival University of St. La Salle- IS in their titular showdown.
In the Aspirants competition, the girls from Hua Ming were unbeaten in the elimination round and topped the Bracket A while STA took the No. 1 spot in Bracket B.
While SJI beat STA in the semifinals, 25-21, 25-8, to earn a twice-to-beat advantage, their first encounter in the championship round on Saturday ended in a three-set thriller won by STA to force a playoff match.
Playing the underdog, STA lost the first set, 22-25, but managed to bounce back in the second set and overpower SJI, 25-22.
The third set saw both teams working hard for every point until STA finally tamed SJI, 26-24.
In the playoff match, SJI withstood the pressure and stamped their class over STA to bring home the title to complete the sweep in NOPSSCEA girls’ volleyball competition.
The USLS-IS girls picked up the third place honors while Livingstone Internatinoal School settled for fourth place.*NAB
