BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The charred body of a charcoal maker, believed burned to death, was found by his son-in-law yesterday in Purok Tuburan, Brgy. Pandanon, Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, after searching for him for almost nine hours.

The victim was identified by the Salvador Benedicto police as Gregorio Caranay, 68, of the place.

Initial investigations of the Salvador Benedicto police showed that Caranay may have been trapped by fire believed to have originated from a charcoal pit.

The fire also razed about a hectare of apier grass and the victim’s makeshift nipa hut.

Caranay, who was engaged in charcoal-making was found by his Robert Mahinay, son-in-law at about 3 a.m. yesterday.

Investigations of the Salvador Benedicto police also showed that it was an accident.

However, the family of Caranay wants an autopsy on his body.

Meanwhile, Senior Police Officer 4 Robert Morin assumed as officer-in-charge of the Salvador Benedicto Police Station last week.

Morin replaced Senior Inspector Joel Batusbatusan, who is due for a career advancement course schooling, Senior Supt. Milko Lirazan, provincial police director of Negros Occidental, yesterday said.*GPB
