Drop in coffee
production seen in 2015

Some coffee growers from La Castellana town, Negros Occidental, are expecting a huge decrease in their production this year due to the typhoons that hit the province last year and the expected dry spell caused by the El Niño phenomenon this year.

This was revealed yesterday by Vic Labrador, president of Brgy. Sag-ang Organic Coffee Producers Association, who added that their coffee production might drop to 10 tons this year from 20 tons last year.

Labrador said coffee farms from Sitios Mercedes, Linggaho and Padre Gomez in Brgy. Sag-ang and the barangay proper comprising of about 100 hectares have already dried up.

He said many of their group members have already harvested their crops from the plants that have not gone dry yet, while others pruned their plants in their attempt to save them.

The Sag-ang Organic Coffee Producers Association has 130 members.*APN
