It is now time for the closing of classes in most schools and the prospect of vacation days are causing joy to both teachers and students who look forward to almost three months of rest from books and school-related activities for students, and of rest, more time with families, and perhaps travel, for teachers.

For those who are winding up their studies in college, however, what they can look forward to are professional examinations for those who had taken up courses requiring them, and for those who need not undergo such, the problem of hunting for jobs so they can start earning and, perhaps help their families and their younger siblings to also go through school and college.

It is to those who are finishing high school now that we are offering some practical advice with regards to their choice of college or universities where they will take up the courses they intend to pursue as a life career.

In the past, one of the biggest problems of parents whose children are finishing high school, was the choice of the educational institutions where they will continue their studies. Then, it was almost a compulsion for parents to pick schools in Manila, believing that those are where their children can get the best training to prepare them for the professional examinations they may need to take. And for that, the families, especially of the lower middle-class ones, had to worry about how to finance, not only the school fees, but also the transportation, board and lodging that they will have to meet for several years.

To this, we suggest that they consider looking at the potentials of the institutions in their own towns, cities and provinces, which have, so far, proven themselves competitive with Manila and universities as far as professional examinations are concerned. Just check on the latest results of such examinations, and how the so-called “local schools” have fared, to convince you.*
