No more animal deaths
from El Niño, vet says

No more livestock animal deaths were reported in Negros Occidental due to the dry spell caused by the El Niño phenomenon, Provincial Veterinary Officer Renante Decena said, yesterday.

Decena said total losses in livestock in the province was still P10,358,400 as of yesterday although the monitoring by the paravets in the towns and cities continue.

He said the Negros Occidental Provincial government has allotted P8 million for mitigating schemes to protect farm animals from the drastic effects of the El Niño phenomenon.

Last month, PVO conducted a seminar on how to make silage, consisting of grass conserved by farmers during the summer months when the supply is plentiful and not required for grazing, so farm animal raisers will have an alternative feed and will not have to use commercialized ones

Earlier, Provincial Agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan also said that no more additional damaged crops have been reported in Negros Occidental due to the dry spell.

Tabianan said they are assessing whether there is still a need for cloud- seeding operations, considering that the province is already experiencing rains. He said the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist has only 15 flying hours left for the cloud-seeding operations.*APN
