Reclamation project in
Tañon Strait opposed

CEBU CITY – The international marine conservation group Oceana has opposed the 11-hectare reclamation project of Toledo City, which is within the protected Tañon Strait, the body of water separating Cebu and Negros islands.

Lawyer Gloria Estenzo-Ramos, Oceana vice president, said there should be a moratorium on reclamation projects and other destructive activities on the Tañon Strait.

The Supreme Court last month declared as unconstitutional an oil exploration project on the Tañon Strait, that was declared a protected area because of the presence of whales, dolphins and sea turtles.

The Cebu Site Management Unit of the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape had earlier granted a conditional endorsement to Toledo City government's reclamation project in Barangay Poblacion.

The SMU, composed of local government executives, required the Toledo City government to secure an endorsement from the concerned barangay.
