Agri office urges farmers
to use organic fertilizers
BY RENE GENOVE

The Dumaguete City Agriculture Office has advised farmers in Negros Oriental to shift to organic farming methods to adapt to the adverse effects of the current El Niño phenomenon.

Fely Barba of CAO said organic agriculture can help farmers produce good quality of crops despite the ongoing dry spell, as they retain the fertility of soil by keeping in the essential nutrients needed by plants to grow. She also said organic fertilizers are cheaper than commercial ones.

Barba said commercial fertilizers have elements that can affect the quality of crops, and along with the prolonged dry season, can bring negative effects on food production.

GSIS opens
scholarship application

The Government Service Insurance System Dumaguete Branch is accepting applications for the college scholarship program for school year 2015-2016 that will provide GSIS members the opportunity to send their incoming college freshmen children to colleges and universities for quality education, its manager, Mercedes Enriquez said.

The scholar may opt to take a four- or five-year course but must meet the scholastic requirements set by the Commission on Higher Education, a press release from GSIS said.

Enriquez said 20 slots of GSIS Scholarship Program are for qualified dependents of persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and solo or single parents.

Reclamation project in
Tañon Strait opposed

CEBU CITY – The international marine conservation group Oceana has opposed the 11-hectare reclamation project of Toledo City, which is within the protected Tañon Strait, the body of water separating Cebu and Negros islands.

Lawyer Gloria Estenzo-Ramos, Oceana vice president, said there should be a moratorium on reclamation projects and other destructive activities on the Tañon Strait.

The Supreme Court last month declared as unconstitutional an oil exploration project on the Tañon Strait, that was declared a protected area because of the presence of whales, dolphins and sea turtles.
