WV bags gold in secondary football,
elem cagers, booters settle for silver

Mission accomplished, was how local football followers described the gold medal won by Western Visayas, against the National Capital region in the secondary boys' football competition of the 2015 Palarong Pambansa in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

The match ended 1-all in regulation but the boys' from Region 6, with the core of the team coming from San Carlos FC in Negros Occidental, beat the NCR-FEU team, 3-2, in the shootout with Joshua Broce, Ashtley Pamilar and Jed Deliarte scoring the winning goals.

The NCR had their revenge in elementary football with a 5-1 win against Western Visayas, while host Davao got away with the gold medal in elementary basketball after pulling off a 67-66 overtime win.

Composed of selected players from different schools mostly from Davao City, the Region 11 squad made a good start, 10-6 in the first quarter but allowed WVRAA to grab the lead, 15-24.

WVRAA continued to control the match until the end of the third, 25-38, but DAVRAA bounced back with a 29-16 run to force the overtime at 54-all.

It was a seesaw match in the extension. But the hometown crowd's huge cheers helped the host team to escape with a one-point victory, 13-12 (67-66).

Central Luzon clobbered Central Visayas, 64-48 to cop the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, the Northern Mindanao and Southern Tagalog regions shared top honors in the elementary chess events.

Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association collected four gold medals as Me Ann Joy Baclayon topped both the individual Standard and Blitz events with 7.0 and 6.0 points, respectively.

Baclayon combined with Lorebina Ii Carrasco (2.5) in powering NMRAA for the two golds in the Standard (10.5) and Blitz (9.5) team events.

In boxing, the Central Visayas boxing team won three gold medals with one silver to emerge as the over-all champion.

Light mosquito John Nino Vega of Mandaue City won the first gold via a convincing 3-0 win over Region 6's Dindo Sabillo in the 36-38 kg. division.

Light paperweight Lloyd Jabez Antoque of Tagbilaran City bagged another gold for Region 7 by outclassing Region 5's Anthony Quintana, 3-0 in the 42 kg. division.

Last year, Antoque, 14, also won the gold in the 36-38 kg.Pinweight Vicente Sios-e Jr. also of Mandaue landed more telling punches to give Region 7 its third gold via a 2-1 decision over CARAGA's Ramel Landa in the 44-46 kg.*PNA
