Police asset shot dead
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A police asset was shot dead by suspects riding in tandem and wearing bonnets, at the corner of Ma. Asuncion Street and EJ Blanco Extension, in Barangay Daro, Dumaguete City, Sunday.

City police chief, Supt. James Goforth, identified the victim as Julie Francisco Manolong, 45, of Barangay Taclobo, Dumaguete, who sustained four gunshot wounds on his body.

Recovered from the crime scene were five empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol, the victim's sling bag with a handcuff inside and other personal belongings, and his motorcycle, Goforth said.

Manolong had been frequenting the police station in the last few days and reportedly confided to a police officer that he was being threatened. The information is being processed and evaluated by investigators.

The police said it is possible that the suspects wanted to silence him for having tipped the police in many instances involving anti-illegal drugs operations. The police is also verifying reports that the victim himself was involved in the illegal drugs trade, Goforth said.

The identities of the suspects and the motive for the shooting are still being investigated.*JG
