The total number of registered voters with biometrics in Dumaguete City as of Saturday had increased by almost six percent compared to that of the May 13, 2013 general elections.
As of Sunday's count of the total number of voters registered in Dumaguete City was 80,643, city election officer Gildu Agoncillo, said.
This is 4,439 registrants more than the 76,024 previously registered voters for the 2013 mid-term elections as seen in records of the Commission on Elections.
Agoncillo said this is not the final number, though, as the official list of registered voters will have to be subjected to an Election Registration Board hearing this month for the approval of applications for qualified voters.
He expressed optimism to have more or less 80,000 as the total number of registered voters after some names are deleted due to death, double entry, or transfer or a voter.
Meanwhile, only 2,811 from the previous number of registered voters in Dumaguete City failed to have their biometrics taken and thus will no longer be able to vote in the May 9, 2016 presidential elections.
So far, the COMELEC has not announced an extension for the registration of voters for next year's polls.
Meanwhile, provincial election supervisor Eddie Aba disclosed his office is still awaiting the submission of final reports from the towns and cities of Negros Oriental for the total number of registered voters as of the October 31st deadline.
He expects the reports to be in by this week, although it cannot be determined yet whether there is an increase in the number of registered voters in the province until after the ERB hearing in Manila on November 16.
COMELEC records show that the province of Negros Oriental had a total of 763,937 registered voters for the May 13, 2013 elections.*JFP
