Police arrest 2 suspects
in slay of kagawad, wife
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Two suspects in the killing of a barangay kagawad and his wife on Saturday were arrested by members of a police tracking team in Hacienda Golez, Brgy. Rizal, Sagay City, almost 22 hours after the commission of the crime.

The victims, identified as Silverio Caro, 65, of Rizal, Sagay City, and his wife, Nina, 64, succumbed to multiple gunshot and hack wounds. Both died on the spot, investigations of the Sagay police showed.

Suspects Danilo Palacios, 44, alias Danny, and Jolito Mahusay, 28, even returned to the barangay after the incident apparently, thinking that nobody saw what they did to the couple, Chief Inspector Eduardo Corpuz, Sagay City police officer-in-charge, yesterday said.

Corpuz, however, said that a lone witness saw what happened. A follow-operation of the Sagay police led to the arrest of the two suspects on Nov. 1.

Caro sustained gunshot wounds in the head, and back, while his wife, suffered multiple hack wounds.

Responding Sagay policemen recovered at the crime scene an empty shell and a slug believed to be that of a 45 caliber pistol.

Corpuz said Palacios was previously arrested for violation of RA 9165, or the Comprehensive Drug Act of 2002. However, he managed to post bail, Corpuz added.

Corpuz reported that P100,000 in cash owned by the victims was missing.

Investigations of the Sagay police further showed that the sibling of the couple was blamed by Palacios for his apprehension.

The killing was believed triggered by land conflict, personal grudges, and the arrest of Palacios for violation of RA 9165.

The arrested suspects are now detained at the Sagay police jail, pending the filing of two counts of murder against them.*GPB
