Negros Occidental is sustaining its momentum of being number one in swine backyard raising nationwide through its provincial swine livelihood program, Dr. Renante Decena, provincial veterinarian, said yesterday.
Decena said the program increases farmers' income by capability building on meat processing or value adding.
Recent records there were 2,280 heads of swine inseminated, 1000 sow farrowed, 10,127 offsprings produced, and 1,540 swine were pregnant, he also said.
The provincial government released 270 heads for PIC gilt and 20 heads for PIC Boar, he added.
The program aims to provide pure breed stocks to backyard raisers to upgrade genetic makeup of existing breeds, improve meat quality thereby increasing market value, address the increasing demand for meat consumption, generate livelihood projects as sources of income for the family, and develop skills of backyard raisers in animal raising, he said .
PVO also focuses on swine herd build-up project, goat breeding project, sheep breeding project, dairy cattle production project and carabao breeding project and artificial insemination project, he added.*KDP
