The Department of Trade and Industry recently held trainings in Capiz shells lamination and hand loom weaving in Hinigaran and Valladolid through its Bottom Up Budgeting projects, DTI senior trade and industry officer Gerin Vergara said yesterday.
In Hinigaran the training for Capiz shells lamination under the town's Municipal Planning and Development Office was for community members of Barangays Tagda and Pilar that are known for their Capiz shell productions, the chief material for the hand-made decors and lamp stands, she said.
Designs and technology for the training were provided by DekoStyle Design and Services, makers and designers of household decors and gift items, she added.
In Valladolid 42 members of the Valladolid Loom Weavers Association in Brgy. Tabao were trained on hand loom weaving using portable handlooms by the New Pathways to Enterprise, Vergara said.
The revival of hand loom weaving was made because of demands from local and foreign markets, she said.
They want to make beautiful pieces for women and children for investors who want to manufacture ready-to-wear items, she added.
Vergara also acknowledged the guidance of Dr. Christine Nelsen of the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation, and councilor Shirley Nacion in the training.*KDP
