To know more

Benjamin CalderonThe proposal for presidential and vice presidential candidates to participate in a nationally televised debate is not only a good idea but offers an opportunity for voters' to get to know more about the candidate and what he or she represents in the national issues that confront our country today.

If such was held this week, one issue to be raised would be the numerous bullets found inside the bags of airplane passengers in our airports. The continuing episodes of bags with bullets that mysteriously appear and the related amounts of cash paid to evade prosecution has gripped the travelling population with anxiety, provided a business boom for the plastic wrapping business at the airports and is hurting our efforts to attract more tourists to visit the country.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has a valid point in demanding a sense of urgency from the concerned national authorities in confront the problem as the frequency of cases has increased. Of course investigations are necessary but these “holdups” need to be stopped as soon as possible. We look forward to know who the perpetrators are and if found guilty will they be made to swallow bullets as part of their punishment.

Another unfolding drama being done live on the national scene is the start of the legal proceedings in connection with the legal issues related to the case of Lowell Menorca II and his family.

Yesterday the alleged attempt to harass the family's household help has highlighted the issue of security protection for the family. The confrontational atmosphere of this case gives us a glimpse of how deep the wounds the dispute has caused and the possible violence that can arise if the case is not handled properly. We continue to follow the story as our interests encourage us to know more.

On the other end, now we know that the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI)'s efforts in positively promoting the socio-economic development of the province has been acknowledged with their being awarded as Outstanding Chamber of the Visayas as well as in the country. Congratulations.

Let us end with an anecdote to encourage us to be careful in want to know more. There is an overweight guy who is watching TV. A commercial comes on for a guaranteed weight loss of 10 pounds in a week. So the guy, thinking what the hell, signs up for it.

Next morning an incredibly beautiful woman is standing at his door in nothing but a pair of running shoes and a sign about her neck that reads, "If you can catch me, you can have me." As soon as he sees her, she takes off running. He tries to catch her, but is unable. This continues for a week, at the end of which, the man has lost 10 pounds. After this he tries the next weight loss plan, 15 pounds in a week. The next morning an even more beautiful woman is standing at the door, in similar conditions.

The same happens with her as the first woman, except he almost catches her. This continues for a week, at the end of which he, as suspected, weighs 15 pounds less. Excited about this success, he decides to do the master program. Before he signs up, he is required to sign a waiver and is warned about the intensity of this plan. Still he signs up.

The next morning, waiting at the door, is a hulking 300 pound muscle man with nothing but a pair of running shoes, a raging erection, and a sign around his neck that says, "If I catch you, you're mine!" The man was supposed to lose 25 pounds in the week; he lost 34.*
