Proliferation of fake
money continues
BY SHIELA GELERA

There are still groups engaged in the proliferation of fake money in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental, Supt. Levy Pangue, chief of the Bacolod Police Investigation and Detection Management Unit, said yesterday.

Aside from the fake dollar bills, there are also persons using or distributing fake peso bills. These are the ones taking opportunity of people who are busy because of the holiday season, Pangue said.

Their targets are patrons of cockpits and vendors of small stores, where transactions are done in haste, he said.

He said they have monitored a group in the southern portion of the city that is still operating this illegal activity. That is why the public should check the money they receive, and if in doubt, check with the nearest police station.

Transactions using fake bills usually happen in secluded areas and the common victims are those who are not knowledgeable enough, Pangue said.

Meanwhile, the police said that the $5 million in fake United States dollar bills seized from Erwin Sicano, 31, and Frelie Toledano, 31, of Murcia, Negros Occidental on Tuesday, came from Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental and San Carlos City in Negros Occidental.

The police have not monitored any factory of fake bills in Bacolod, but they have information that a group is reproducing fake money outside the city, Pangue said.*SGG
