Trekking at Mt. Kanlaon was halted and pilots were alerted not to fly close to its summit after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised alert level 1 over the restive volcano at 6:55 a.m. yesterday.
Authorities were trying to reach a female Polish mountain climber who began her climb at Mt. Kanlaon on Monday, hours before the volcano had a steam explosion.
Dennis Pinosa, superintendent of the Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park Protected Areas, said attempts to reach Ana Hodson and trained guide Valmer Villar by phone yesterday had failed.
A Bacolod resident was sentenced to double life imprisonment yesterday for the sale and possession of illegal drugs, while his companion was meted one life term.
Bacolod Regional Trial Court Branch 47 Judge Therese Blanche Bolunia found Alex Ferrer Casalda guilty beyond reasonable doubt for possession and sale of shabu, and meted him two life sentences and to pay a fine of P1 million.
The judge also found Florenio Mariano Bautista guilty beyond reasonable doubt for the sale of shabu and sentenced him to suffer the penalty of life imprisonment and to pay a fine of P500,000.

Canlaon gov't on alert,
monitoring Mt. Kanlaon

The Canlaon City government in northern Negros Oriental is keeping a close watch following a raised alert level for Kanlaon Volcano yesterday morning.
Mt. Kanlaon straddles the provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level for Kanlaon Volcano from Alert Level O to Alert Level 1 at 6:55 a.m. yesterday.
