The province of Negros Oriental recorded three deaths due to typhoid fever this year compared to only one last year, a report submitted by assistant provincial health officer, Dr. Edgardo Barredo, to the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance unit of the Department of Health, said.
From January to November 15 this year, 489 typhoid cases were recorded with three deaths, which is 38 percent higher compared to 354 cases for the whole of 2014. The victims were aged five months to 91 years old.
Barredo said the deaths were recorded in Bayawan City with the highest number of typhoid cases, so far, at 75, Guihulngan with 66 cases, Mabinay 54, Siaton 49, Canlaon 38, Dumaguete 32, Bais City 28, Sta. Catalina 17, Sibulan 13, and Ayungon 12.
Meanwhile, Negros Oriental reported zero casualty on rabies cases.
According to health authorities, this is attributed to the conduct of a rabies caravan where free clinics were offered.
Target for vaccination this year is 8,000 dogs but more than 8,600 pets had availed of the free vaccinations.
Target de-worming for dogs and other animals is 1,500 but 1,918 was achieved, while 2,201 had availed of vitamin supplements, 1,103 were treated, and 853 for spay and neuter services.*JG/JFP
