‘She has not paid me back'

Dear Tita,

My co-workers and I enjoy going out to the mall or to see movies and especially, to eat at different restaurants. This is our special treat whenever payday comes. Each one of us pays for our order after the meal.

When a new restaurant opened recently, we were excited to try it as we heard that the food was very good. The problem was, the cost of the buffet was pretty steep and would cost more than what we usually spend for our meals when we go out. However, after hearing so many good reports from those who had tried the restaurant, we decided to go when payday came.

As we were excitedly leaving the office, one of our co-workers Leona (not her real name), asked if she could come along as she wanted to try the new restaurant too. We said ok and told her how much it would cost. She looked disappointed and said she didn't have enough money for the meal as she just paid her electric bill. So I said I'd pay for her and she could pay me back next payday. Leona happily came along.

However, when the next payday came, I waited and waited but Leona didn't pay me back for what I spent for her meal. She acts as though she doesn't owe me anything. I resent it – it is a big dent on our budget at home and I really need the money for our expenses this Christmas. It's spoiling my mood at work but it seems mean to ask Leona to pay. What to do?

Dear Bothered,

It's not mean to ask for the money. For all we know, she might have forgotten or, she may not have the money and feels embarrassed to tell you so. This is a real awkward situation but she should talk to you and tell you when she can pay you back. It would be worse if she just avoids the issue and your resentment would build up. Give her a week more and if she still doesn't say anything, write her a little reminder of her “utang”.
