BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The signing of a partnership agreement between Energy Development Corp. and its first set of partners, led by representatives of the governors of Negros Occidental and Oriental, highlighted the launching of EDC's “10M in 10 for a greener Negros” program at the Saint Paul University in Dumaguete City, Saturday.

The expanded BINHI greening legacy program of EDC will pave the way for 10 million trees to be planted, grown and maintained in the next 10 years. This will be done with EDC's various partners from private companies and government agencies, local governments, the academe, the military, police, media and NGOs, to restore the forest covers of Negros Island.

EDC president and chief executive officer Richard Tantoco led the ceremonial tree-planting activity, which kicked off the project, at the university ground. He said, “Modern life has led us to consume our earth's resources at a pace that has never been seen before. The Philippines is testament to that.”

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of Negros Oriental convened recently to address the prolonged dry season expected to affect the agricultural production in the province due to the El Niño phenomenon.

Meteorological officer Neptune Catarata of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, said the country is experiencing drought and dry spell which may further intensify this year and will persist until early 2016, a government press release said.

The weather bureau forecasted that from September to December this year, Visayas provinces, which include Guimaras, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Cebu, and Biliran in Bohol, are affected with drought conditions.
