BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Five political aspirants in the May 2016 polls have filed their certificates of candidacy for governor of the island-province of Siquijor, Provincial Election Supervisor Jerome Brillantes said.

These are incumbent Gov. Zaldy Samson Villa (Liberal Party), former governor Orlando Bongcawel Fua (United Nationalist Alliance), Claire Bulahan Lucero (National Unity Party), and two independent candidates, Armin Vicoy Demetillo and Regidor Yurong Miraflor.

A five-cornered fight also looms for the position of vice governor of Siquijor. These are Galileo Lee Bongcawel Jumawan (Ind), Arturo Pabutaya Pacatang, (UNA), Bryan Joshua Serrano Pernes (LP), Mei Ling Minor Quezon (LP), and James Peter Grefaldia Serencio (Ind).

Incumbent Vice Governor Fernando “Dingdong” Avanzado, a Filipino singer-actor-composer, is not seeking reelection in next year's polls.

Meanwhile, Rep. Marie Anne Serrano Pernes (LP) of the lone district of Siquijor will be pitted against three other candidates for the same position. They are Orlando Ancos Fua Jr. (UNA), Carl Mark Albon Ganhinhin and Ramon Vicente Antonio Medalle Rocamora, both independent candidates.

The province of Siquijor in Central Visayas or Region 7 is composed of six municipalities: Siquijor, Maria, Lazi, Larena, San Juan and Enrique Villanueva. It is part of the coverage of the Diocese of Dumaguete, headed by Bishop Julito Cortes.

For the May 9, 2016 elections, eight candidates each for the two provincial districts of Siquijor are running for a seat in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

One hundred sixty-three other candidates are also seeking election in the towns of Siquijor, to include the positions of mayor, vice mayor and municipal councilors, the Commission on Elections provincial office said.*JFP
