Peewee Demonteverde sizzled with 54 points as Legends 92 posted a 125-89 victory over Money Global Credit Corp. 2008-09, while Rotary Club of Metro Bacolod 93-95 pulled off a 104-93 win over AX Currency Exchange in the quarterfinals of the 8th SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup played Thursday night at the Msgr. John Liu Activities Center.
The Legends had several offensive putbacks, free throw opportunities and fastbreak points to score at least 30 points in each quarter to post the breakaway win.
Oliver Manaloto added 29 points for the Legends while Glin Ortaliz shot 14 points, Mark Yee and Toffel Tan with 10 points apiece, and Deonyson Dy added 5 markers. Chris Javelosa held down to two points, but was the defensive anchor in the middle and hauled down several rebounds.
Kevin Ramos led Money Global with 38 points backstopped by Xylesis Herdon, who registered 13, while Carmichael Recto and Kazuya Tsunoda had 9 points each. EJ Go added 8 points and Mark Chua scored 6.
In the third quarter, Michael Ang knocked down four treys and Christian Castro put in 7 inside points to pull away from a 48-44 halftime lead for Rotary to a 77-61 lead at the end of the third quarter.
AX excelled on its fastbreak attacks led by Timothy Montinola and Axo Yao, but struggled against the zone defense of RCMB .
RCMB slowed down the game and had better set offense for their frontcourt men Castro and Dennis Gamboa, while Ang was hitting from beyond the arc and Mark Antonio was slashing his way to the heart of the AX defense.
Castro paced RCMB with 26 points, Ang made 7 triples and finished with 25 points under his name, Antonio delivered 23, Gamboa with 14, Monroe Chua and Alex Fernandez with 4 points each.
Montinola dropped 33 points for AX as Yao tallied 27, Jerrick Tajonera and Joshua Magay with 12 points apiece.
Semifinals is set on Tuesday with O Hotel Residences /Quarterwave 99-2k tangling with the Legends while AX Currency Exchange-Cityscape 2006-07 battling it out with RCMB.*
