Guv - Reforms needed to
prevent poll mockery
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said reform should be implemented to ensure that a mockery of the electoral process is prevented.

Marañon said a criteria should be set on who can file certificates of candidacy, especially for the presidency.

The COMELEC said 130 people have filed certificates of candidacy to run for president in 2016, among them an "intergalactic space ambassador" and a man who believes he is Lucifer.

“This shows how crazy our electoral system is,” the governor said.

When you hire househelpers you ask where they have worked before and their experience, but no questions are asked when a person files his CoC for president, the governor pointed out.

Anybody can file a CoC for president, even crazy people, he noted.

There should be some reform and criteria set to prevent nuisance candidates from filing CoCs, he said.*CPG
