‘The Immanent Visitor' opens

Iloilo-based visual artist, Marge Chavez, is holding her first solo exhibit, “The Immanent Visitor”, at the House of Frida Gallery, Café Bobs in Lacson Street, Bacolod City, until Sept. 18.

The artworks, which feature gold paint, were inspired by the artist's mother, who used to be a jeweler.

“When I was a little girl, my mother would lay out all these gold on our white-sheeted bed. It left such an impression on me until now,” Chavez said during the opening of her exhibit Friday.

It took her four months to create 10 paintings that also explored themes of love, loss, rebirth, and promise, a press release said.

She said the first solo exhibit was both exciting and scary, even though she had already joined group exhibitions in the past, such as the feminist art exhibit “Feminine Wash”, held also at Frida Gallery.

Chavez is a graduate of the College of Fine Arts and Design from the University of Santo Tomas, and is currently teaching Fine Arts and Digital Media and Interactive Arts, at the University of San Agustin and Central Philippine University in Iloilo.

On why she decided to exhibit in the City of Smiles, she said, “The opportunity came up and Bacolod is such a welcoming place to artists.Though hopefully, I will someday be able to show more of my works here and in Iloilo.”*

Chan Lim exhibit
opens at SM City

An exhibition of more than 200 Chinese and western paintings of the Chan Lim Family of Artists and their students officially opened at the main atrium of SM City Bacolod Saturday and will run until September 20.

The opening was led by the family's patriarch, Chan Lim, Elsa Leonardia representing Bacolod Rep. Evelio Leonardia, Councilors Em Ang and Wilson Gamboa Jr., Yu An Log and Vicky Ho of Sun Yat Sen High School Alumni Association, Ramon Cua Locsin, Nelson So and Allendy Tan of Dynamic Youth Iloilo, SM mall manager George Jardiolin and SM Supermalls' regional marketing manager for Visayas, Kristine Yap.

The Chan Lim Family of Artists have been actively involved in the arts for more than four decades now. Their exhibit at SM includes an interactive painting of three generations.

Lim, 78, said he has been painting for about 60 years and his four sons, who are all engineers, have been involved in Chinese painting since they were small, and have been doing it for about 30 years.

He still paints four to five hours every day and his style is a mix of Western and Chinese painting. His favorite subjects are horses, he said.

Lim said the family gathers every Saturdays and Sundays just to paint.

He said this is their first exhibit in Bacolod, while every year, they hold two exhibits in the United States and six in the Philippines.

His son, Alex Chan Lim, country manager for MoneyGram, said they do realistic painting and their exhibit in Bacolod includes over 100 artworks on lanterns and scrolls. They have also painted on porcelains and fans.

He said they been have giving free lessons in Chinese painting as part of their corporate social responsibility. They also provide the materials for free.

Alex said the free workshop they conducted at SM Bacolod Saturday was participated in by about 400 students.

“You have to have the talent, interest and opportunity to be able to paint,” he said, adding that he can do a painting in just five minutes.

Alex said they have held exhibits in other areas in the country and their exhibit in Bacolod is one of the biggest.

George Jardiolin, SM mall manager, welcomed the Chan Lims during a program Saturday.

He said what is amazing about the family is that none of them are full time painters. In fact, they are all professionals and actively engaged with multinational companies.

However, it is passion and love for the arts that bring them together to nurture their artistic talents, Jardiolin said.*CGS
