Gilas Pilipinas finished second after beating US Selection, 78-74, Saturday night in the 2015 Jones Cup basketball tournament in Taipei.
Despite playing without playmakers Jason Castro, Terrence Romeo and Jimmy Alapag, the Filipinos came up strong for a near lopsided victory against the Americans, the only team that defeated Iran.
Iran went home with its four Jones Cup titles in the last seven years after beating Russia's Spartak-Primorye, 78-54, its 7th win in eight games.
The Philippines, on the other hand, finished the tournament with 6-2 slate after defeating Chinese Taipei Team B last night, 96-67.
The tournament is a tune-up assignment for the Gilas Pilipinas in preparation for the forthcoming FIBA Asia Championship.
Matt Ganuelas-Rosser and Gabe Norwood took over the backcourt for their three pointguards and the Gilas Pinas went almost trouble-free against the US team composed of 7-foot-3 NBA veteran Keith Closs and former PBA imports Jamal Watkins, Marquin Chandler and Calvin Warner.
It's an up-and-down game and we had some objectives we tried to do well. I think we're okay. We had pretty much success, Gilas coach Tab Baldwin said as quoted by www.pba.ph report.
I'm happy to get that result. I'm happy for the players because they're tired. But everybody here is tired. You can see the Americans. They had no pace, he added.*PNA
