The Highway Patrol Group in Negros Oriental stressed the need for closed-circuit television cameras to be operational 24 hours a day, to help in the anti-criminality campaign in Dumaguete City.

HPG chief, Insp. Robelito Mariano, said he observed that some CCTV units of several business establishments are not really working at all.

He made the observation while looking for leads on a carnapped motorcycle that was parked outside an establishment at Perdices Street in Dumaguete, where CCTV cameras are installed.

He said the cameras are not working while in some, the footage was of low quality recording.

Mariano said the HPG supports the move of the Commission on Human Rights, that pushes for an ordinance that will ensure that CCTV cameras are operational all the time, and that footages must be made available immediately after a crime is committed in its vicinity.

He said they are asked for supporting documents before the HPG can secure a copy of a video footage, and such could delay their pursuit of suspects.

He also suggested that if possible, CCTV cameras should also be installed in parking areas.*JG
