21 students lauded for
winning math contests
Twenty-one students from private schools in Bacolod were recognized by the city government for their achievements in three mathematics competitions recently, a press release from the city said.
St. John's Institute's Christopher James Yap won the gold in the 11 th International Mathematics Competition, held in Singapore from July 31 to August 3, while schoolmates Christian Jacob Yap, Robert Gerard Uy, Raymund Carlo Masbaño and Hans Benedict Gaw Te of Bacolod Tay Tung High School garnered silver.
Masbaño also captured the 15 th slot in the 9 th Sudoku Thailand International Open 2015 July 3-5. Nathan Mayer Dy and Justin Tan, also of St. John's, tallied two bronze medals, with Elisha Eusebio of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos High School and Vance Johann Retirado of St. Scholastica's Academy, the press release also said.
Another SSA alumna, Julline Grace Balinas, added to the medal count by winning bronze in the China Primary Math Olympiad in Hang Zhou, China in July. Ella Marie Anglo and Mikhaila Valeree Velez also received their citations for winning merit awards in the competition, together with Robert Frederick Uy, who was also part of Philippine Team A, who won second runner-up in the 2015 China International Mathematics Competition.
Natalia Beatrice Dy was also commended for her 7 th place finish, and as 2 nd runner-up in the team category in the Beijing World Junior Sudoku Championships. She also reaped bronze in the 2015 China Girls Mathematical Olympiad.
SJI's Daniel Miguel Ong and Christian Dean Espinosa captured gold, and Sanielle Meliz Ong won the bronze, in the 2015 International Mathematics Wizards Competition in Hong Kong August 9-12. Mikkhos Velez and Jaeven Allan Hsu were also recognized for their merit awards, alongside Christian Marc Beñosa.
Before the awarding, Mayor Monico Puentevella congratulated the students for representing the country and the city, and for being good academic ambassadors. He also lauded the parents, teachers and the schools for “raising good students and children, who are blessed by the Almighty”, the press release added.*

Lingkod Bayan awardee
Senior agriculturist Dina Alanes Genzola of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist in Negros Occidental won the Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award in ceremonies marking the 115 th anniversary of the Civil Service Commission and the 50 th celebration of CSC Region 6 at SM Iloilo Thursday, a press release from Capitol said yesterday.
Genzola, 51, has been with the provincial government for 24 years, and is credited for conceptualizing and implementing OPA's Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program, that is now being replicated by other local government units in the region.
As the Region 6 PLB awardee in the “Hero ang Public Servant Search”, Genzola will represent Western Visayas in the national finals, with the awarding set in Malacanang, the press release added.* back to top
STI-WNU holds
2nd educators' summit
School heads in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental participated in the 2 nd STI-West Negros University's Educators Summit, held at the Teodoro Hall of the university's main building recently, its press release said.
The program was opened by the school's executive vice-president, Ryan Mark Molina, while Earl Jude Cleope, dean of the College of Education of Silliman University in Dumaguete City, shared his extensive knowledge on local history, specifically of the Negros Island, which aimed to increase public awareness that will address the pressing need of Negrenses in preparation for the one-island region. It also promoted the importance of local knowledge in both basic and higher education, the press release also said.
The summit was attended by Jonalyn Navarro, Novelyn Vilchez and Ronnie Tababa of the Department of Education Division of Bacolod City, among others. Participants from various schools expressed appreciation of the activity since what had been shared were relevant to the Negros Island Region, its impact to the socio-economic landscape of the province, its culture and its people.
STI-WNU also recognizes the significance of promoting local knowledge through digital tools, resource-sharing and networking in preparation for the Asean integration, so activities for its advancement are being organized.
The participants said similar activities should be organized for better understanding of the one-island region set-up, the press release added.*

Lions raffle winners
announced
The Council of Lions Club Presidents of Negros, District 301-B1, announced the raffle draw winners during the first cabinet meeting by district convention recently, its press release said.
Samson Avon won the first prize cash of P15,000, followed by Mike Chin Jr., P10,000; Ren Godine, P7,500; Liza C of Silay City, P5,000; and Arnold Ang, P3,000. The two special awards of one night stay at Cebu Parklane Hotel were won by Erna Sarabia and Veronica Po Ong, the press release also said.
Consolation prize winners are Joemarie Moriente, Kurt Alinsog, Boracay Macoy Amity, Josie Cuenca, Nelia Nemenzo, Romeo Llena Jr., Lynnette Dionisio, Raymund Dela Cruz and Remy Silverio.
The raffle committee chairman is Bacolod City Airport Lions Club president Joaquin Diño, the press release added.*
