Climate change
and its impact

Rolly Espina

No doubt about it. Everybody now blames climate change as the culprit behind the recent floods that have ravaged towns and cities of Luzon, including Metro Manila.

Even now, China is also being pounded by rains from another typhoon that has swept inland from the Pacific Ocean.

And, yes, there was the report from the wire agencies of how a drying up river and lake in the United States has killed thousands and even millions of fish.

And, ofcourse, the most common comment from most people – when you throw garbage everywhere they just come back to haunt you.

And that was exactly what happened recently with Roxas Boulevard when more than 200 loads of garbage had to be bailed off where the seahad hurled them back to bedevil city authorities and the MMDA.

So, we also have another sleeping volcano in New Zealand that just suddenly unexpectedly blew its top after one hundred years of somnolence. Just like Mt. Pinatubo. The more superstitious believe that the floodsin the metropolis and other Luzon provinces may be a sign of God’s warning to those who are favoring the RH Bill despite strong opposition by Catholics.

And, yes, most believe that only Catholics and Christians are against the measure. They often forget that the Muslims are just against it asother religious groups.

That’s the problem, while vociferously against the measure, the Catholic Bishops of Conference of the Philippines seem to be waging a single-handed campaign against it forgetting that the Muslims are as against it as they are.

As pointed out yesterday by a Muslim lady, Muslims are encouraged to have more children who will join the legions worshipping and serving Allah.

The solons who are against it, must have forgotten that the Muslims are so against it and would, therefore, presumably vote against those who vote for the measure.

One does not want to be superstitious. But I also somehow believe that the floods may have truly been a warning by God that He is not overjoyed by the determined drive by pro RH solons to push through with the bill, which both Catholics and Muslims oppose vigorously.

The latter group may not be as militant as the Catholics in opposing the measure. But it must be remembered that Senator Francisco Tatad had pointed out that the Muslims led other groups who condemned the RH bill proposal in the Cairo Conference.

Unfortunately, it seems that we have overlooked that particular fight waged by Muslims against the bill.

And we ended up single-handedly trying to impress upon the advocates that we are only ones against it.

If there is anything that one can be impressed with Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. it is that he remains unfazed by the assertion of Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez that he is running against Marañon as candidate for governor of the province.

Despite the innuendoes and the leaked stories about how many are those favoring Lim-ao, Marañon remains unperturbed, he insists on the fact that he is still on friendly terms with Alvarez. And instead of taking advantage of the discomfiture of the latter over the involvement of his son, Ilog Mayor John Paul Alvarez in the gun slaying of Kabankalan City RTC Judge Henry Arles, Marañon simply glosses over the case and points out that a man is considered innocent until proven guilty.

And he insists that the relationship between him and Alvarez remains friendly. They are still on speaking terms, he asserted in an interview with the media.

And instead of counting heads of mayors for him and Alvarez, Marañon simply points out that the people themselves will be the ones who will vote for governorand the other positions at stake in the 2013 polls.

Still a lot of things can happen between now and the signing of certificates for candidacy.

And both Marañon and Alvarez seem bent on waging a friendly contest.

Will the court allow the Writ of Amparo that the mother of one of the RPA-ABB suspects in the killing of Arlesfiled against the National Bureau of Investigation?

That is something that is worth watching.*
