‘A little girl’s royal ball’

ivy
What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and everything nice. Every child dreams of fairy tales full of their favorite cartoon characters: Cinderella, Prince Charming, Alladin, Mermaids, Beauty and the Beast and so many more. Seven-year- old Alyssa Sanchez was no exception. And so on her 7th birthday, her parents Dr Renan and Lisa Sanchez decided to give her a fabulous Royal Ball-themed children’s party at

Garden Royale, which was magically transformed into a miniature castle (the décor was brilliant!). Each table had a towering centerpiece of colorful balloons in various shapes which the kids loved to play with. Guests came in their favorite cartoon character costume, mostly princess and prince attires. The stage had a fantastic backdrop of castles and turrets, moonbeams and twinkling stars.

As we entered the venue, we walked down a red carpet (a la Oscars) to get to our

table. Alyssa’s grandparents, Nene and Mellie Leonardia, were there to welcome us and ply us with yummy appetizers. My good friend Melba Tan and I were asked to be the judges for Best in Costume contest. Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous merienda cena which included a huge crispy lechon (groans of terror from my diet-conscious hypertensive friends!). The highlight of the program was the Royal Waltz wherein the young princes danced with the celebrator who looked so pretty in her yellow-gold Cinderella gown.

How delightful it was for the audience! The winners for Best in Costume was Prince Diego Leonardia and Princess Kya Clarisse Igarashi. A magician stole the show with his fantastic magical tricks. What a terrific time we all had! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALYSSA!*

‘Save the seas’
concert Friday

A diverse group of artists, with Swedish saxophonist Anders Paulsson, will showcase their concern for the environment in a unique concert entitled "Save Our Seas" to be staged at the Santuario de La Salle in Bacolod City 7 p.m. tomorrow.

“The message will be interpreted through various music genres such as pop, classical music, jazz, fusion, New Age, Latino, world music and our very own Pilipino music,” Gerry Ledesma, Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation president, said yesterday.

Paulsson‘s advocacy of using music to open doors of awareness about the need to "save our seas" is best displayed in this concert when he teams up with a 25-piece string ensemble, an ethno-percussion group, a world champion chorale, world-renowned choreographers, a dance company, a full rondalla, and a rhythm section coming from the various top bands of Bacolod, Ledesma said.

The show is directed by Tanya Lopez, of the Executive Committee for Dramatic Arts, of the National Commission of Culture and Arts.

Guest performers get to showcase their own musical renditions and then play the original compositions of Paulsson, who will be playing the soprano saxophone.

Songs that tell a story about nature, particularly Danjugan Island in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, will be performed.

Paulsson is also a choral arranger whose affinity with Negros has led him to compose in December, a new choir piece entitled "Heaven Come Down", that will be performed for the first time on Friday by the 2010 International Grand Prix Choir champion, the La Salle Chorale, Ledesma said.

The "Save Our Seas" concert is a joint effort of the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc., and the University of St. La Salle.

Tickets are at P100, P300, P500, and P1000 and for inquiries, the public may contact 09189417396, Ledesma said.*
